“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
Although it hasn’t looked or felt a lot like springtime lately, we all look forward to the coming of spring each year. Seeing the trees budding, the flowers blooming, and the fields greening can be an important lesson for all of us.
By nature, our hearts are as barren as a winter landscape. We are born with no relationship with God, no power to fight temptation or accomplish anything lasting. Most importantly, we are born headed for an eternity of judgment without God.
By God’s grace, however, he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to come to live, die, and be resurrected for our sins. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, our entire existence changes.
No longer are our hearts forced to be a barren wasteland; now they can “become new” like springtime fields coming back to life.
The transformation that takes place when we accept Christ as our Savior and Lord is total. We are described as “new creatures”! While we may outwardly appear as the same person, our hearts are changed since “old things have passed away.”
We can thank God for His amazing sacrifice and gift. After the snow finally ends and we see nature coming back to life this spring, we can be reminded of that offer of new life in Jesus Christ.
